Donnie: Kim thanks so much for taking time out of your
schedule for us
Kim: No problem!
Donnie: how did you get your start in the
music industry and what was your first industry
job?
Kim: I was a student at the Art Institute of Atlanta and got my
first internship at Motown Records in the
Regional Atlanta Branch in Sales from the
Regional Sales Rep Lisa Jackson while Berry
Gordy
was still President After being an Intern for a
yr and a half and moving from Motown to MCA as a
intern for Candis Bonner and Martha Frye, Teddy
Riley and his manager at the time Gene Griffen
noticed
my hard work ethics while on promo tour in
Atlanta and were impressed. They offered me my
very FIRST paying job in the industry to work in
the management office in New York! Teddy Riley
moved me to New York and the rest as they say is
HISTORY! After Teddy Riley gave me my first full
time pay check the checks and offers kept
coming! LOL.
Donnie: what makes an artist instantly sign able?
Kim: Its a combination for me. The song! and How the Artist
delivers it on tape.
Donnie: what qualities got you your first A&R appointment
Kim: I have to say presentation. I always felt I had a good ear
and eye but I knew I needed to get the attention
of a label in order for them to not what I
wanted to pitch. My first artist was Dionne
Farris and I had heard her demo of the song "I
Know" and I knew it was a hit but I was offered
a job position as a regional A&R rep in Atlanta
and I knew in order for the interviewer to
remember me I needed to be the best out of
everyone they were interviewing. I went to
Dionne on my birthday in 1993 and asked her to
let me present her song "I Know" to Sony. She
agreed and I asked a friend that was a radio
announcer to be the DJ on my tape presentation
to Sony of artist I would like to sign "if" I
was a full fledged A&R exec. He made it sound
like Dionne's Record was on the radio by
announcing it and everything on my tape
presentation. Sony loved and Dionne was given a
record deal and I was given a job!
Donnie: Kim I know you've gotta run but thank you again so much
for your time
Kim: my pleasure
