Charlus compared to Morrissey
review from The Big Takeover:
Charlus: tragic accident

The resemblance of this dramatic duo's lead singer and lyricist, Daniel, to Morrissey is so uncanny, you might initially mistake this to be the ex-Smiths leader's new side project (on "I Lost My Baby," you won't be able to tell the difference!). Perhaps he lacks The Mozzer's self-depreciating humor, but neither does he mince words, as evidenced by song titles such as "I Never Liked My Body" and "I Am Secretly In Love With You." And the industrial-strength opener, "The Opium Farmer" (which introduces bandmate Paul Opalach's percussive synths), chronicles a suicide bomber's fate. Daniel's assertive, frank personality and slightly narcissistic tendencies may be an acquired taste for some, but his sturdy, affecting vocals, coupled with Opalach's bright, occasionally danceable rhythms, are likely to draw you in despite your misgivings. Pocket Gods: Album Ready
(lo-fi sci-fi – the making of the pocket gods new album)

The pocket gods have been hard at work the last few months on their second album that is to be released in may 08. front man mark lee explains what's been happening in the strange land of the gods;" we played a headline spot last october (07) at the in the city music conference in manchester as part of the saash (st albans arts) showcase and as a result of that show a major promotion and pr company offered their services to help push the pgs into the big time..the only stipulation being that the pgs had to produce a album for release in may 08. so we've been out of social circulation and hiding away in our studio drinking tea, eating snacks, and writing toons about aliens, lard and blow up dolls….the usual pgs fayre!" he continues: "the album is called "lo-fi sci-fi" and i suppose is a kinda concept album on aliens, ufos, and weird stuff in general and we've even got a special guest star – the paranormal radio presenter howard hughes – formerly of talksport but now has his own pod cast called the unexplained….of which the pgs are all avid fans…i was well chuffed when he said he'd be honoured to be on the album as apparently the last time someone wrote a song about him was when he was on talksport and all the presenters did a version of him singing the footy anthem vindaloo! the album had been made with the usual pg lo-fi ingredients – fuzz guitars, kids toys, surreal lyrics all mixed together in a rock n roll sauce with spicy bits added to give it that extra kick…..(out the magic jams).

musically i guess it sounds like nothing else on this planet..maybe there's a band on neptune or alpha centauri we sound like??? but back to earth it's kinda in the style of the beatles white album, with a bit of teenage fanclub and in terms of poppyness i suppose the kaisers chiefs with a bit of scifi abba..scabba anyone? The best thing about this album is that is makes you laugh out loud whilst gazing at the heavens – who else would write a toon exposing the joys of lard and expanding waistlines..praise the lard indeed! we will be out an about over the next few months drinking tea, talking guff, and saving the world, as well as playing toons from the new album and dressing up as spacemen whilst shopping for nutriments in asda."
