John Legend to Headline NY Rocks for Tsunami Relief Concert
New
York, NY,
January 24, 2005
R&B’s newest superstar, John Legend, will be
headlining the NY Rocks for Tsunami Relief Concert on Monday,
January 31, 2005 at Crash Mansion in New York City. Organized by
prominent Asian-American musician, Maggie Kim, the concert also
features a diverse group of well-known local and national artists:
Bree Sharp, Kevin So and Ms. Kim herself, among others. Proceeds
from the benefit will go to Global Greengrants Fund, a U.S.-based
public foundation that makes grants to grassroots groups in
developing countries, particularly those affected by the tsunami
disaster.
John Legend
just released his Kanye West-produced major label debut, Get
Lifted, to much fanfare, garnering spectacular reviews as well
as becoming the #1 selling R&B/hip hop record for three weeks
straight. He will be supporting Alicia Keys on her upcoming Diary
tour.
Bree Sharp
had a cult hit with her song “David Duchovny”. She's played The
Lilith Fair and has shared a bill with the likes of Duran Duran,
Sugar Ray, Pat Benetar, Sophie B. Hawkins, Jeffrey Gaines, Shannon
McNally, Dido, Graham Parker, and Everclear.
Kevin So's
original blend of pop, rhythm & blues, and hip hop has garnered
attention and praise from Billy Bragg, Mary Lou Lord, Richie Havens,
David Wilcox, and most recently Keb’ Mo’. He has opened for some of
the industry's best-known acts including Joe Cocker, Randy Newman,
Richie Havens, Billy Bragg, Mary Lou Lord, and Boz Scaggs.
Maggie Kim
was the winner of the first JANE Magazine/Maybelline Reader CD
Contest. Kim and her band, 17RED, have just returned from a tour of
Korea, where they were invited to perform at the groundbreaking
celebrations for New Songdo City, a $20 billion city development
project. Kim was chosen as “the face and future of Korean-American
music” and is one of the most visible Asian-American music artists
today.
